85% of the world's doormats are made in Kerala, India, which also has a 91% literacy rate and the lowest rate of population growth in the country. I'm thinking how pleasant it would be to live there in the sunshine and make doormats for a living.

The trouble is, when you can't read you are in danger of becoming a doormat for those who can.

I'm just saying...

But for those of who can, and do, weaving Welcome mats in the sunshine seems like such a great way to live... These are things I think about while shoveling snow from my sidewalk.

Ah, yes, Snow Shoveling Syndrome. I have managed to maintain a Tahiti fantasy my whole life, since I saw my first Gauguin painting at age 4, even though I have not had to dig out of blizzards for over 10 years. But it's hats, huge-brimmed aromatic ones made of palm fronds, that I weave in those reveries, not Welcome mats. Is that wrong?

The rain started the next day washing the snow and the dreams of Kerala down the gutters. Hmmm, no I can't see anything wrong with weaving palm frond hats instead of Welcome mats. I think my choice was based on wanting to somehow be of service while basking in sunshine and literacy and low population growth. But I'm ready to ditch that plan without regret if you want a travelling companion. I can see myself -- huge hat nodding with sagacity listening to your lectures on Gauguin. I had to look him up because my art education is limited, but I see what you mean. I'm sold, quite easily sold.
